Precautions:

  1. Take readings very carefully
  2. To avoid undue pressure on the object between studs, use ratchet and not the drum for screwing

Sources of Errors:

  1. The surface of object under observation may not be smooth.
  2. The fixed stud, the movable stud, the micrometer screw and the nut of the instrument may not all be coaxial.
